On the boundary line between Latium and Campania in the province
of Latina, lies Minturnae (today Minturno). The town bordered by the Garigliano
river, is of Ausonica origin (an ancient Italic population). Built up before Rome, it was a Roman colony in 295 B.C. and mentioned by historians as a refuge of Latini, when defeated in Campania in 340 B.C. |
| A flourishing town under Augustus and Caligola it was later on
destroyed and the population moved up the hill which took the name of Traetto (today
Minturno). The remains of the Roman acqueduct built by Vespasianus (Ist Cent.), the Roman Theatre dating back to Augustus' times, the Forum and its Republican and Imperial temples, the Anfitheatre and the Antiquarium are the evidence of the ancient town. |

. | In the centre of the town are the baronial Castle, St. Peter's
Cathedral and th churches of St. Francis and SS. Annunziata. The local costume (Pacchiana) still worn today and the Feast "Sagra delle regne" are living evidences of a town, rich in tradition.
